TDDK AU | Each Others' Translator

It was a well-known fact in 1A that Izuku is the Shouto-Whisperer. Shouto wasn't the most talkative person, and even though he was blunt to a fault, his sparse use of words still tends to cause a couple of misunderstandings.

Iida and Yaoyorozu can understand him to some extent, but they aren't as fluent as Izuku, who had the impressive ability to translate a whole sentence even from just one of Shouto's soft hums. They aren't even dating  (much to chagrin of those losing in the betting pool) yet Izuku understood the other boy like a mind-reader.

With that dynamic, everyone should've expected that the ability would go both ways

They find out about Shouto's Izuku-Whispering skills when, during a minor villain attack, Izuku is hit with some kind of silencing quirk. Unfortunately, the quirk's effects cannot be reversed, but fortunately, it would eventually wear off. They just weren't sure when that would happen.

There weren't any initial problems. Izuku was a fast writer and he could mostly reply to everyone by writing it down on a notepad, but it wasn't ideal because he couldn't always bring a notepad and pen everywhere.

They finally face a problem during Heroics.

They're grouped into teams and are tasked to strategize on a way to ambush the enemy stealthily. Izuku realizes that he's out of ink and can't convey his thoughts. Hagakure, one of their teammates, suggests that he try to gesture it out. However, when Izuku does, it looks more like flailing than him acting out a plan.

Their whole group is so confused... until Shouto, who is also part of the group, speaks up and says that yes, he can definitely create a platform to the 2nd floor of the building while propelling Kirishima towards the window.

Everyone stares at him - flabbergasted. Asking if he really just understood what Izuku said, and Shouto now returns the confused look and says yes, of course he does, didn't they?

And that's when they find out that Shouto can pretty much understand Izuku as well. Being unable to speak made Izuku's gestures more expressive, but not always clear. Yet Shouto is able to interpret them with no problem, as if they are having a full conversation.

(The stakes in the TDDK betting pool definitely get higher during this time. Also cue more exasperated friends because PLEASE YOU'RE PRACTICALLY BOYFRIENDS ALREADY JUST MAKE IT OFFICIAL WE CAN'T KEEP WATCHING THIS PINING AND OBLIVIOUSNESS).

The Anglo-Saxon Rune poem.

Now this isn’t the only rune poem in existence there is Norwegian and Icelandic rune poems. Now I prefer Anglo-Saxon and believe it to be more accurate but there’s nothing wrong with reading the Norwegian or Icelandic and choosing it. But these said poems won’t have all the runes associated with the poems even some extra Runes or less than of the traditional Aetts. But right now I’m focusing on a the Elder Futhark which is all included in the Anglo-Saxon poem at times different names and translations.

This poem is also Galdr and speaking the poems you’re essentially invoking and evoking them. Runes are very powerful letters and magical symbols that must be treated with high respect. Some can be dangerous to use like ᚦ. It’s also used for anyone who wants to study and learn the runes in depth, reading the poems can gather your own interpretation of them. Also the Anglo -Saxon includes a few extra runes. I recommend if you were to use the actual Anglo Saxon Runes look and study the runes because yes it is describing the same rune some don’t look like the Elder Futhark, for instance Ansuz (Elder Futhark) and Aesc (Anglo Saxon) are the same rune but different name or meanings. Anglo Saxons did recreate the Ansuz rune but just putting it out there just because I'm putting the Elder Futhark runes doesn't equal to what that Anglo Saxons used.

ᚠ᛫ Feoh or Fehu - Cattle are compensation for everyone though each man shall greatly share his if he will be awarded honors from his Lord.

ᚢ ᛫ Ur or Uruz - Aurochs is brave and has horns above, this very firece animal fights with its horns, a great wanderer of the moors, it is a proud creature.

ᚦ ᛫ Thorn or Thuriaz - Thorn/Hawthorn is exceedingly sharp for every servant seizing it is evil, and it is extremely harsh to each man who rests among it.

ᚨ᛫ Os or Ansuz - The God is the creator of all language, wisdom's foundation and consolation of sages and everyman's joy and trust.

ᚱ ᛫ Rάd or Raidho - The Ride up to everyman's hall is comfortable and very fast for he who sits high on a mighty horse over the miles.

ᛜ ᛫ Ing or Ingwaz - Lord Ing was first seen among the east Danes it is said, until he later went back over the sea, his chariot following after, thus the brave men named that hero.

ᛞ ᛫ Daeg or Dagaz - Day is the god's ambassador beloved of men, the great god's light, Mirth and also hope, prosperous and poor, all enjoying it.

ᛟ ᛫ Ethel or Othila - Home is very dear to all people if there they have the opportunity to for justice and honesty while enjoying prosperity in the dwelling most often.

Additional runes to the Elder Futhark set

Ac - Oak is on Earth for the children of men, meat-animal's fodder it travels often over the gannet's bath, the sea tests whether the oak possesses noble truth. (The rune looks like F but the small arm on top is hooked like a check mark or small v and the bottom one is slanted like Ansuz.)

Aesc - Ash Tree, is lofty, glorified by men stiff in its trunk, it holds its position exactly, although it fights against many men. (I explained at top, this rune looks exactly like the Elder Futhark Ansuz - ᚨ)

Yr - Bow is for noble men and warriors everywhere joy and a more of distinction upon a fair horse, steadfast on its course , a part of the war gear. (This Rune is ᚢ but with a small line in between the legs)

Ior - Beaver is a river fish, and although he resides there, he forages there on land he had a fair dwelling, water surrounding that place he joy fully holds dear. (This rune is a straight line vertically with a X in the middle of the line)

Ear - The Ground is loathsome to all men, yet certainly the body will e set upon there, the corpse grows old, the soil accepts its pale bed-fellow, it leaves fall, pleasure depart, men cease to be. (This rune looks like ᛏ but the two small arms are hooked that look like small Vs or check marks)

And that’s it! I do recommend reading other translations and the other rune poem, at times different translations can be worded much better and help to understand a lot better. If you don’t really like the rune poem on this blog there’s nothing wrong either checking out Norwegian or Icelandic rune poems and to see if it will help you better!

Jumu'ah Sohbet: 6 September 2024

Alhamdulillah we have entered South African Spring. More importantly, we have entered Rabi' al-Awwal which is the month in the Islamic calendar that marks the birth of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Shukran Ya Allah (Divine gratitude) to the count of infinity, and Bismillah (And in that Divine name):

#1. Shaykh Nishaat, our heartsmith, had us spellbound as he asked us soul searing questions and made statements like:

- When we are looking around ourselves, what eyes are we using to do that? In fact, almost everything happens without consciousness!

- We constantly have to check that what is negatively mirrored in the world is not a reflection of ourselves.

- There is so much information and knowledge out there but how much of what we do is from the Source of us? Instead, how much of what we process about the world, is shaped by our "tribe"?

- Shaykh Taner's Qur'an translation into English, as a 9-and-half year mission, exists for us to deeply understand and connect with Allah's guidance. However, many of us remain uninspired, wrapped, and enveloped in the aura of our egos!

- As we approach the beautiful month in which our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born, Allah sent him as Rahmatul lil-'Alameen (Mercy to the worlds). This mirrors the exact song that we've been inspired to sing, by our Qari Zardad of Qurtuba Online Islamic Studies, for Yawn un-Nabi (an annual festival marking his blessed birthday) with our Ilahi band, Subhana'Allah (Divine glory) for sweet serendipity!

#2. On a Saturday Sohbet, Anne (our spiritual mother) again made us appreciate the benefits of her motherly instincts while explaining some of our key Tariqa functions:

- About our Shaykh Taner's first Urs, she tearfully reflected that she felt unimaginable love and joy after her initial sadness. As we were all doing Zikr of Allah joyously, followed by all the meals that served as our signature of the 'Eating Tariqa'!

- She remarked on the irony of mankind where her initial idea of honoring Shaykh Taner in a Mausoleum was not locally permitted! But, she encountered a local Buddhist 'Shrine', which was permitted and significantly bigger in size than our initial plan for a Mausoleum. As a multinational Tariqa, we are accustomed to lost-in-translation, of course! 😅

- She also said that we have both biological and spiritual family. Our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasised the importance of our blood relatives, and even if you have a connection as thin as a cotton thread, if they pull, you must go. Just as when you pull on them, you hope that they'll come! Our spiritual family obligations are that we work for and follow Allah. We have personal and congregational Zikrs of equal merit and purpose.

- We are called upon to serve Allah in the Tariqa where we're training and learning as we serve by being out of our comfort zones. We should be able to work with each other, no matter what!

- In fact, helping people is more preferable to doing all our daily assignments perfectly every day! More importantly, our service doesn't involve politics, relationships, and business!

- She even compassionately urged us to find when we feel Allah the most to determine the ideal circulatory rhythm in ourselves to offer our personal daily assignments. This is after I realised that mornings wear me out, and instead when I am on my Rife treatment (my perceivable low-energy electromagnetic waves), I am the most connected to not only a source of healing but to our Shaykh Taner and our Silsila (spiritual chain). Our school of complementary health has complete faith in this subtle form of healing.

- In our Tariqa, we don't compare lessons or ourselves because we don't know the other's inner situation.

- Knowledge is important, but self-knowledge or self-awareness is even more important. Here, we fondly remember a Hadith (saying of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)): Whoever knows himself knows his Lord!

#3. Lastly was an exchange between our Shaykh Taner and Anne. It described the palpable purpose we gain in the practice of Zikr as a salvation. As we keep doing Zikr, we get out of the way, what I joyously describe as managing to drown out the ever-pervasive nafs, and naturally connecting to Allah. It was likened to filling the petrol tank of a car or our bodies with energy gained from food. Similarly, with Zikr, our beings are replenished and go forward in the spiritual world.

With gratitude, we end our Jumu'ah Sohbet. We yearn our beloved Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) team-spirit as Mahfouz embarks on his first Cricket Match of the year, and his love, as Muntaha extends her love to Adam and baby Zaynab for a play date, during that time.

shadowheart takes a LONG while but eventually is like yes there is room for two half-elves shrouded in mystery and darkness here, you ARE the sister i never knew i wanted, i WILL turn you goth, i will not link arms with you but i WILL take it personally if we dont go on every mission together

lae'zel and tabito are just (nods at each other). lae'zel likes that she minds her own business and is a straightest-line-between-two-points person

wyll thought he liked her until he found out she doesn't actually give a shit about little people. now he's not mad at her he's just disappointed

cue the "what kind of samurai ARE you" "i never said i was a samurai. samurai are honorable. fuck off" conversation that boils over one night over dinner when she advocates to not get involved in the grove business

only then does astarion sit up from across the camp and go okay i can work with that. (he's also fucking appalled to learn that she knows three language but none of them are elvish)

gale doesn't care. he's pretty neutral on her since she does translate some foreign books for him, but she told him she won't teach him eastern magic so stop ASKING and he's still not over it

halsin's like "ok haha ur a little weird, let me know if you want to learn some faerûn elven traditions since you were raised by your wanese human side—" "no." "haha ok i'll be over here if you change ur mind :)" and never talks to her without prompting again. kinda thinks of her like "wow that young lady sure has lost her way, hope she finds it one day"

jaheira likes her a lot but knows she doesn't want a mom so they have a pretty good relationship of snark and mutual respect

1. little women (2019)

watched it with three of my best friends when it first was in theaters so that definitely added to the message and experience watching it. i love how greta gerwig directed the sister dynamic. she’s gone on record on interviews and also if you can find the screenplay itself that in the script the actors’ lines were written on top of one another to reflect the spontaneity and chaos of sisterhood and family through the film’s dialogue. so genius?!?! this adaptation just felt so real and genuine and i also see a little of myself in all the sisters 🫶

2. challengers

UGH i did like a whole deep dive here but in short: luca guadagnino you absolute mastermind. i love tennis, i love colorgraded film and photography, i love hot people!!!! story was insane, i quite literally had to sit in my car for like half an hour just processing when i got out the movie house before i felt normal enough to drive home lol.

3. emma (2020)

again i did a thorough tedtalk on this one. but i’m a big jane austen fan!!! and the aesthetics and score on this adaptation were just off the charts and so so lovely. love the regency era and i think they translated it to screen in a very appealing and classic (although maybe not entirely historical but hey it’s art) way. i’ll always come back to it as my comfort movie ngl.

4. call me by your name

amazing story. (not a love story mind you!!!) which is actually why it stuck with me sm bc i went in with my hopeless romantic self just to be fuckin crushed. watched it two summers ago and it took me like weeks to recover, it broke my heart in a way that felt so good. also just a downright beautiful film all around (colorgrade, cinematography, acting, music, everything!!). in guadagnino we trust!!!

my fav ghibli film bc it’s just so haunting in a way none of the other ghibli films are and i like that. like the way some of those characters were drawn was lowk gross—but i find that kinda gnarly. so over the top fantastical it makes my brain tingle in a certain way.

my fav wes anderson film in both stop motion or live action (my fav live action of his was the most recent asteroid city tho!). truly art and has such a heartwarming story but at the same time the DRAMA. my lord. crazy how captivating the story was even if half of it was in largely unsubtitled japanese—unique choice but i actually liked what it added to the movie a lot especially considering the movie’s pov from an english-speaking dog. i’m actually a big cat person but i finished that movie so convinced that fuck yeah that dog is man’s bsf right there

the amazing spiderman movies

andrew garfield’s spiderman is my fav <3 but also i love the darker feel to this version of spiderman. maybe it’s bc i’m also a big batman/dc fan (sorry my marvel babes </3) and generally those movies have been handled with a more dark tone. but nonetheless andrew garfield is hot too so that’s a plus!

AGAIN, SO FUCKING CUNTY even if i’m a reluctant disney enjoyer. i watched the first installment when i was real young but in 3d at the movie house. SO COOL. watched the second one with my mom at home. IMMEDIATELY WATCHED IT AGAIN. angelina jolie is maleficent, n i love how these movies characterize the villain in such a genuinely human way i don’t think anyone could’ve seen coming when these babies first came out.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

10, and about half aren’t up to my current standards but I’m leaving them up for posterity.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

71,030, which does not remotely reflect how much I write. I wasn’t particularly inclined to answer these given the AO3 bias to the questions but then I was tagged twice so here we are.

I’m sitting on just about 401k words of unpublished fic. : )

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Dragon Age [all games], Pathfinder [mostly Wrath of the Righteous], and TES [Skyrim and Morrowind with a bit of Oblivion] are the biggest ones, but also Shadowrun, Mass Effect, Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout 4, Game of Thrones, Divinity: Original Sin II… if I get hooked into a story there is liable to be fic it seems.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

I’m only giving you two—From Dreams to Deliverance [non-canon Nerevarine/Dagoth Ur] at 100, and The Adventures of Polyshep [post-canon Shep/Garrus/Tali OT3 + others having mostly fluffy fun] at 55.

5. Do you respond to comments?

Absolutely! And if we’re talking privately I WILL talk your ear off in response to any comments you make.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don’t go in for angsty endings but my Nerevarine’s fic will probably have a less happy / joyful / triumphant ending than the others, and my V’s ending will likewise be bittersweet.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hmm… hard to say. Perhaps a tossup between the Dragon Age fic and the Pathfinder fic… Ama and Isanna both get everything they ever wanted and more.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Ama’s AU fics get hate in the future for mage/templar shipping…

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, generally things that are descriptive but not terribly explicit, and most sexual intimacy is a bit glossed over. I find I tend to write at least one descriptive sex scene per pairing and then gloss over the other instances—partly because it isn’t necessary to the story, partly because writing sex scenes takes so much more effort for me and I have no interest in coming up with endless variations on that theme.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I’ve written exactly one very whack crossover and have no intention of doing that again—Skyrim/Drowtales.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but I’d be honored if someone asked to translate something of mine.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

I co-wrote a bit of unpublished Skyrim fic with spouse long enough ago that neither of us would be proud of it anymore, with each of us taking different POV chapters for our vampires that were going through the Dawnguard questline together. More recently I’ve been borrowing one of his WotR ladies for my Pathfinder fic and having him supply her dialogue if that counts. Amusingly, both instances of our characters interacting in this way involve his judging mine for their romantic interests lol.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

At this point I doubt my TES fics will ever get finished, but it would be nice if they did… Rya’s story was too grand for my capabilities at the time, and Rendrasa’s I simply lost motivation on and with her playthrough finished, well… hm.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and characterization. Dialogue is my beloved and I’ve been told repeatedly that I capture canon characters well. Also romance, soft and tender things...

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Too many filler words and phrases that get repetitive… but I like them. So.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

If it fits and is understandable, sure. I sprinkled some German into my Shadowrun fic, but it was mostly pet names and I translated everything in the notes. As a reader I don’t want to be left with questions as to what was said, or have to look things up separately.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Good gods, probably H*rry P*tter ages and ages ago, before junior high, if I’m being honest, and not much of it. Not remotely interested in that fandom anymore. Then a tiny bit of Les Mis fic not too long after that. Terrible but at least some of the Les Mis concepts are… highly amusing, shall we say. Mermaid AU??? Younger self, what on earth…

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

My Dragon Age longfic-in-progress, Knight’s Star. I love Ama sooo so so much and I think her extended conversation with Samson is one of the best things I have ever written. The Pathfinder fic is shaping up to be a close second though. Learning many things about myself with that one hehe such as how desperately I want a gnome boyfriend.

i think for a lot of us, relationships and ~weddings~ with our 2D boys and gals and nbs would be multicultural and i really really think that’s wonderful and beautiful

for eg you’re south Asian right? imagine ur wedding. bakugou insists on having as many wardrobe changes as you at your wedding so you’re always matching … his mom spends years!!!!!!!!!! before the wedding (she knows you’re the one for her son the moment she sees you two interact) with a mentor studying your cultural fashion so she can ask you (as if you wouldn’t have asked her personally!!!) for the honor of designing one of your outfits… maybe with a lil Japanese twist to show the union of two cultures… beautiful. whatever she can do to make the person who caught her son’s eye feel welcome. i hate it when his parents are written as standoffish and rude like where was that even implied... anyway his father and mother (and bkg himself ofc) wear your cultural clothes with pride at your wedding and you know what they’d design bespoke Japanese cultural outfits for every member of your family too.

i’m Chinese and i like to think of how our families would interact and bridge the cultural gap too. a union, not a division. what would your family do to make the bakugou’s feel welcome and included? mine would do the Chinese tea ceremony in English/have a translator and would include Japanese tea as well. they’d be invited every lunar new year and given red packets oranges and we’d teach them the phrases in mandarin (what i learned in school) and Cantonese (my family’s dialect) during the mooncake festival we would teach the bakugou’s how to make mooncakes. his parents would make us custom mooncake tins as a gift. for wedding’s (there would have to be two ceremonies) we’d do photoshoots in both sets of cultural outfits as well. i like to think both sets of parents would cook for each other. my traditional Chinese mother would look lovely in a kimono and i know mitsuki would kill it in a qipao. sorry for the word vomit. what about you, fang? if you’re up for it, tell about me you and/or your multicultural interactions w the bakugous 💕

This is a silly rant and im putting multiple suggestions for each cuz idgaf so feel free to chime in with ur favs

1 - Racules actually i think should be one of the only ones to keep -star to befit his grandiose nature. Otherwise i think Swiftheart or Hawkheart - swift bcuz hasties haha and it invokes fleet footed legendary heroes + heart because awww hes such a good hearted benevolent ruler. Hawk also invokes epic bird of prey but also hawks as in warhawk. Raw it kinda sucks cuz racules-star doesnt flow well darn s ending name

2 - HIS EVILSONA: Girafang!! Evil! Bite the hand that feeds you!!!

Full evil name: Foxfang!! Gotta be a predator of cats (in wc world) because becoming what ppl fear. And the alliteration kinda matches some of how theyve been translating it. Foxes are normally a lil too tricksy but in wc-world theyre more ferocious/straightforward. Also play on the foxheart insult

Honorable mention to tigerfang because its very grandiose much like declaring oneself king and it does harken to the og villain tigerclaw. Im open to suggestions here as foxfang is scrappier while tigerfang is more forceful. Ig we havent seen enough of his revolution tm in action to truly judge

Full/alt non evilsona name: hear me out: Dovepelt. A very simple unassuming suffix for a peasant, but to me pelt also makes me think of like a literal pelt, to like cover others with. Putting your skin on the line etc also. Dove because aww all he really wants is peace :). And flocks of em yknow and bonus mourning dove/bleeding heart dove fun

3 - Yanmapaw the man who started it all. Obviously he needs a really quirky lategame firestar style name as the most progressive nation. I’m feeling Waveflash. Like a tidal wave standing high and unwilling to break, flash for his flashy nature and invokes technology and dragonfly wingbeats yknow. Wavebeat is also tempting but i think its a lil too tech heavy i think. This maybjust be me but water and its bonds flows stronger together to me. Also thus far we are keeping the colors kind of. Im so good at this

4 - Himeno ran. we need a multi-syllable princess-y name here. I kind of like Daffodilshine? Feels fancy and flower = medicine cat. Shine bcuz of her pride as the center of attention yknow. Rosestrike i think is cute too, fsncy flower and strike for her striking appearance/pride/haha her sword. I feel like sun could go somewhere but shine is prettier and how can i steal sun from tendoy. 5 - Kaguragi.

Seems a wise ruler and light-hearted, but has a duplicitous heart allegedly. God im trying so hard not to do another bird one but sorry i love birds. Magpiefur? Skydapple? Cloudwillow? Shadefeather? Magpie self explanatory. Sky and cloud both lofty and yay blue sky but can turn stormy. Fur and feather are both more luxurious suffixes to me. Sky and cloud also kinda relate to his farming deal thing. Magpies are loud and tricksters. I kinda want Badger smthn for a lot of reasons but i think its a little too aggressive in warrior cat world

6 - Rita.

Okay we gotta go hardcore here. Im temtped by mountain but it diesnt quite do it for me. Froststark. Blizzardstone. Icy, unyielding. I almost want hammer for hammer of justice given their alleged vicious justice and arguably cats could know hammer as a verb. Frostchain is also epic.

Hi! I'm introducing some friends to the untamed and making some notes on where the netflix subs don't give enough information/good translations, according to the fandom. I saw your translation of the 'to die by your hand' scene and it KILLED me, so I was wondering if there are any other particular scenes you think it's important to note a different translation? Thank you so much if you can!

ooh so there aren't any scenes i can think of where the translation falls so so short of the actual emotion and meaning as much as that one, however there are definitely some less dramatic instances.

in general, i would say that mandarin (and a lot of other languages from what i've heard) has a lot more inherent emotional depth than english, so in translation, a lot of the subtitles sound very emotionally neutral or ambivalent when they really aren't.

the instance of this that sticks out to me the most is during the confrontation between wei wuxian and jiang cheng at the guanyin temple (ep 48, ~9 minutes in) where wuxian says to jiang cheng「都不要放在心上了」(dou bu yao fang zai xin shang), which the subtitles translate as "please don't keep it in your heart," which i'm actually not really mad at as a translation, but it's just not a phrase used much in english, so it sounds slightly awkward/doesnt convey the emotional context of that phrase.

so for context, mandarin has multiple ways of saying, loosely, "don't worry." there's「不要擔心」(bu yao dan xin), which is probably the most common and versatile to say it, and there's「不要放在心上」(bu yao fang zai xin shang), which is the one wuxian says to jiang cheng. (there's other ways too, they're just not rly relevant here) the literal translation of it is "do not put it on your heart," which the netflix is pretty close to, but ofc that doesn't tell u much abt usage. the way i've explained it in the past was, say u made a mistake at work and were beating urself up over it.「不要擔心」is something your coworker or boss might say to you to essentially say "hey it's no big deal, don't worry about it, ur fine;" it can be very casual. whereas, once you get home and start talking abt ur bad day at work,「不要放在心上」is more likely something your parent/sibling/partner/other loved one would say to you as they put a bowl of ur favorite soup in front of u. it has a level of inherent familiarity and deeper desire to comfort the person ur talking to than「不要擔心」. (note: i say inherent bc「不要擔心」doesnt have to always be casual/relatively emotionally neutral, it can be said w emotion ofc but the words themselves do not carry as much emotion as「不要放在心上」.

other than that, i’m not remembering any other specific scenes rn (if i remember smth, i’ll rb w the addition and @ you), but one thing that happens throughout the show is translation discrepancy when characters are addressing each other. for example, when wuxian and jiang cheng talk to yanli, the subtitles always have them both addressing her by name, but in chinese, family members often dont address each other by name, like my younger brothers both call me 姐 (jie), which means older sister. jiang cheng calls yanli 阿姐 (a-jie) most of the time (the 阿 at the beginning is just a prefix used in front of names and other forms of address to express familiarity, it’s the same character used in a-yuan). wuxian calls yanli 師姐 (shijie), which is what you call a senior female fellow student studying under the same master/in the same school/etc.

nie huaisang calls mingjue 大哥 (dage)/哥 (ge); 哥 means older brother and 大 means big, so 大哥 is often used for the eldest brother (esp common if there are multiple brothers). an interesting thing is that wangji does not call xichen 哥 or any variation of it, rather he calls him 兄長 (xiong zhang), which also means older brother but is a term of respect and much more formal, so that’s also a reflection of their characters and upbringing. 兄長 is not in common use nowadays but 哥 very much still is.

after nie mingjue, lan xichen, and jin guangyao take their oath of sworn brotherhood, they also change their forms of address with each other. for example, guangyao calls xichen 二哥 (er ge), which means second older brother (since xichen is the second oldest) and calls mingjue 大哥 (like huaisang does). (i feel like i vaguely remember guangyao being called 三弟 (san di), which means third younger brother, by someone but don’t remember if it was xichen or mingjue.)

(also impt to note that in chinese culture, familial terms as forms of address aren’t strictly reserved for family (whether that be blood or found). for example, in a casual setting, you can address any woman who is your parents’ age or between their age and your grandparents age as 阿姨 (a-yi) (or name + 阿姨), which is the term for your maternal aunt, and you can address any man of the same age range as 叔叔 (shu shu), which is what you’d call your paternal uncle. similarly in a familiar/casual setting, you can call women older than you but younger than your parents 姐姐/name + 姐, like the daughters, who are all younger than me, of my parents’ friends call me jessie jie-jie. and you can call men in the same age range 哥哥/name + 哥, like how wang yibo calls xiao zhan, zhan-ge. the same applies for people younger than you, with which you would use 妹妹, younger sister, and 弟弟, younger brother.)

another example is that jin guangshan calls jiang fengmian 江兄 (jiang xiong), 江being his family name ofc and 兄 meaning brother (same character as in 兄長, which wangji calls xichen), since they’re of the same age and status and their wives are sworn sisters. xichen, on the other hand, calls fengmian 江宗主 (jiang zong zhu), which means sect leader jiang. in the subtitles, these are often just translated as “you,” when they’re talking directly to him. 

so in general, there is a lot of information abt characters’ relationships, level of familiarity with each other, age, etc that is contained in their forms of address that just doesn’t come across in the netflix subs, since those default to their names like 80% of the time.

“Bucky’s fiancée is going to say a few words.” You think it’s odd that you’ve gotten a priest. Bucky had been through so much, what person comes out the other side believing in a just God who put them through hell? “Please.” He steps aside, your train of thought cut short.

“What do you think happens when you die?” Bucky asks so quietly you almost don’t hear him. “Do you… Do you believe on heaven?”

You turn to look at him with furrowed brows. “Do you?”

“I don’t know.” He won’t look at you. Bucky’s eyes are stuck to your ceiling fan as his fingers tap anxiously against his stomach. “Even if I did, I don’t think I’d be there.”

It’s a small crowd. You supposes that’s not surprising. Those who knew Bucky before Hydra were dead, Steve was gone. T’Challa is here though. Shuri too. Grim looks on their faces as they come to stand beside Sam while you step forward to make your speech.

You open your mouth, but no words come out. The speech you’ve written is held so tightly in between your fingers that it rips. You flinch at the sound a jarring reminder that Bucky had always been the one to unravel your tightly wound fists when the stress became too much. That he would no longer be able to do so.

Who would now?

Your eyes trail over the casket, an American flag draped over it, and you laugh. A hysterical fit of laughter that has people looking around uncomfortably.

“How does a man live through one of the worst wars the world has even seen just to…” You trail off. Tears are burning in your eyes and you can’t care enough to force them back. “Bucky Barnes was a good man. He wanted to right his wrongs in the world.”

You crumple the pre-written speech up entirely. “He wasn’t perfect. He… He never made his side of the bed. He always left his shoes lying around for me to trip on. Then laughed about it,” you smile grimly at the memory.

“Bucky!” You groan as you cradle your knee close to your chest. You can feel the throbbing pain of what no doubt will be a gigantic bruise across you knee cap.

He looks over his shoulder from the couch to stare at where you’ve fallen in the entry hallway. You glare as amusement dances in his eyes. “Yes, любовь всей моей жизни?”

“Don’t try and sweet talk me.” You can’t stop the smile as you climb to your feet. “It won’t work. How many times have I told you to put your shoes away? I didn’t build the shoe rack for nothing.”

Bucky laughs brightly. He walks over to you with a big smile that you know will kill your anger within minutes. “Brat.” Your murmur as his arms wrap around you.

You glance down at your feet. “He didn’t believe in separating colors so our laundry always had color bleeds.” You swallow thickly. “He broke promises. He… He was supposed to come home. He promised to come home.” Your voice is choked up and tears stream down your cheeks.

“But he was good.” You force out. “He once asked me if I believed in heaven or hell and I… I still don’t know the answer,” you glance at the priest, who just looks at you with pity, “but I do know Bucky was good to his core and whatever there is after death, he’s in a good place. I hope you all find comfort in that.”

As you step back into Sam’s space, soldiers step forward. It had been Sam’s idea to give him a veteran’s honor funeral.

You can’t say thank you when they hand over the folded flag because your legs give out underneath you. It’s like the flag being placed in your hands made it all official.

You crash to the ground, the leaves screech underneath your knees and the wet grass soaks through your black clothing but nothing matters. Not when Bucky was being lowered six feet into the ground and you were still waiting for it all to be a joke.

“Breathe.” Sam says softly as he kneels down beside you. It’s impossible though, all that comes out are choked breaths and sniffles as you clutch the flag close to your chest. “You’re okay. Breathe.” He tries again, rubbing a hand up and down your back.

“Marry me.” Bucky blurts. It’s three in the morning and you should both be asleep, but it was hard when each episode ended on a cliff hanger. You laugh, and Bucky shakes his head with a smile. “I’m serious, marry me.”

Your heart nearly stops. “W…What?”

“I was going to,” Bucky rummages through his nightstand drawer as he speaks, “do this later. At dinner or the park, but this… This feels right - ah hah! - So, marry me?”

He turns to you with a ring in hand. Your mouth falls open in shock while he grins smugly.

“любовь всей моей жизни.” Bucky murmurs when you don’t respond right away. There are small ticks of nervousness, the way he vibranium fingers clench and unclench or the small smile that overtakes his smug grin. “Marry me?”

Like you would ever say no.

You visit all the time. Your therapist says however you want to grieve is okay. Nobody can judge you, but you can sense visiting him everyday doesn’t help you move on. Could you ever really move on though? Bucky was a piece of you, a part that you would never get back.

“I miss you everyday.” You whisper. “Not a day goes by that I don’t wake up and for a brief second look for you then realize…” You fiddle with the ring still on your left hand. “I’m doing better though. I… I’m working again. Sam and I go out to dinner once a week. I’m trying. I know you would’ve wanted me to try, so that’s what I’m doing.”

“I love you.” You say softly. “любовь всей моей жизни.”

You stand hastily wiping the tears off of your cheek, the metal now glaringly absent from your hand.

All that’s left of Bucky Barnes is a headstone surrounded by flowers, a flag and a diamond ring.

Story - summarized

Luming feels memories swirl around him as he comes into consciousness. He opens his eyes to find a golden lake. Memories of wishes make the lake glow, so he decides to name this place the Lake of Wishes.

Every time a new wish is made, it appears as a lantern on the lake’s surface. Luming collects all of these and places them on an antler stand in his home. The one that takes the spot of honor is a brilliant lantern from a boy named Lin En.

The brightness of a wish’s lantern is tied to how strong the wish is. But whereas the other lanterns show happy wishes, Lin En is crying in his. How could a wish be sad?

Luming keeps an eye on the lantern as he himself tries to find a way out of the Lake of Wishes. However, a mist surrounds the lake, and when he enters the mist to try to pass through, he reemerges into the Lake of Wishes. He is trapped here. He can’t fulfill anyone’s wishes.

Over time, he meets Yexiao, a girl from Miraland. They spend a day together, and she shows him some of Cloudcrest’s cooking. Yexiao notices Lin En’s lantern. She comments on how bright it is. Luming tells her that Lin En is working hard to make his own wish come true, that the young man no longer wants to rely on the God of Wishes for help.

Yexiao then suggests that maybe he needs help from an outside source. She tells him that there must be a way for him to leave and fulfill his own wish. Luming wonders about this, even after Yexiao has left.

Finally, when the New Year comes again, a girl named Nikki and a cat named Momo appear at the Lake of Wishes. And just like that, the border of mist is gone.

Luming can finally visit Miraland.

Connections

-During the events for the CNY 2022 hell event, Luming says that he already met Yexiao. She likes to wander, as shown in her Reflection for Thousand Wishes.

-When Luming sees Lin En making the wish, the boy looks cold and sad. We find out from Qin Yi’s Reflection for Pollia Mist Silk that he had an impoverished childhood and would often go cold or hungry. That’s how Qin Yi/Lin En met the deer that would become Luming. They took care of each other.

-Luming tells us that Lin En “reunited with his family.” This is not quite true. We learn that Lin En is actually Qin Yi (see the Fun Fact below for more), and the “reunion” with the Qin family is actually the final events of Mind Maze 3.

Fun Facts

-Lin En’s family name (lin) translates to “jade.” In other Reflections, you meet a boy/young man who went by Jade while he was serving an abusive actor/mentor. And while Luming was right that “Jade” found a family, it actually was the Qin family. He only saw Jade become Qin Yi and join the Qin family, but he never learned the name change.

-The Chinese word for deer is “lu.” So the name “Luming” is a play on the words for “deer” and “illuminate.”

-Deer are considered lucky in Chinese mythology, as their Chinese word “lu” can also mean “wealth, success” depending on intonation.

-This is the first time that Yexiao makes something without adding too much spice. She tells Luming the dumplings he made should be salty.

Arahsamnum 2021: Inshushinak

A figurine from Susa tentatively identified as Inshushinak in a currently inaccessible article on the Louvre’s site As the two preceding entries dealt with Lagamar and Ishme-karab, it only feels appropriate to cover Inshushinak in today’s installment.

Inshushinak’s name is pretty self explanatory - it’s derived from Sumerian and means roughly “lord of Susa,” which is exactly what he was famous for: Susa was a prominent city on the border of Mesopotamian and Elamite spheres of influence, and Inshushinak was its tutelary god. No depictions of him have been identified with certainty, though it has been suggested that the so-called “god on snake throne” motif common in Elamite religious art in at least some contexts represents Inshushinak. In Mesopotamia proper he was of little importance, though it’s evident he was known very early already (unlike many other foreign deities, who only start to appear in Mesopotamian records in the Ur III period). In god lists he usually appears close to various snake-themed oddities like Tishpak and Ishtaran, and every now and then one king or another would visit his temple in Susa. However, next door in Elam he was one of the most prominent gods. While Susa was his holy city, his prevalence in personal  names indicates that he was held in high esteem by Elamite rulers regardless of origin through much of said cultural area’s history. Some of the most famous Elamite rulers, such as Puzur-Inshushinak, were named in his honor. While no texts providing detailed accounts of Elamite theology are currently known, it has been established that Inshushinak was regarded as rišar napappir, “greatest of gods.” Only other Elamite deity referred to with such an epithet was considerably less well known Humban. Inscriptions also indicate that to Elamite rulers, Inshushinak was a source of royal power, similar to Enlil or Inanna to their Sumerian counterparts, Dagan to those in the upper Euphrates area, and so on. What makes Inshushinak rather unique as far as heads of pantheons go is the fact that it seems his primary character was that of an underworld judge. One of his temples in Susa was known simply as haštu, “tomb,” and the best preserved texts dealing with his role in the beliefs of inhabitants of Elam - at least those who lived in Susa itself - are funerary in character. According to them, Inshushinak awaited the souls of the dead in the underworld; his assistants, Lagamar and Ishme-karab were responsible for guiding each deceased person to him, and it has been proposed that they took the roles of defendant or prosecutor - or rather advocatus dei and advocatus diaboli - during the procedure. For well over a century it has been the consensus that the judgment involved the weighing of souls, and that another participant was an unnamed deity responsible for it, but a recent translation of the source material by Nathan Wassermann challenges this notion, though confirms other assumptions about the character of Inshushinak and his underlings. Inshushinak’s authority as a judge extended beyond the underworld, and he was invoked as a guardian of oaths and in various legal proceedings, a role which in Mesopotamia was usually assigned to the sun god Utu/Shamash or to the little known, though seemingly major, Ishtaran (no obvious relation to Ishtar). Due to shared connection to snakes, the underworld and law, and close location of their holy cities, a connection between Ishtaran and Inshushinak has been proposed by some researchers, with one source going as far as assuming god lists were meant to indicate they were viewed as brothers.

i am running thru ur tumblr to find ONE POST to cite for tvtropes, and i agree so hard with the soulmate stuff. what if my soulmate is an awful abuser, i want the choice to NOT be with them without some painful physical consequence or loss of perception if i don't date them just because the universe said we were "meant to be"... plus if it's just a magic thing it "feels" more justified in-universe that soulmates exist and less like an ass pull so you could justify getting 2 characters together

oH gods this is something that I have SO many feelings about that probably is slightly informed by my own orientation and preferences, but. feelings. this got long so it's going under the cut

so there are three and a half major things that I have a problem with in terms of general soulmate tropes that are "there is one person who is your perfect romantic partner" (which to be fair I've seen a number of soulmate AUs do that trope with the addendum "although it only applies to a certain percentage of the population / not everyone has soulmates / everyone has soulmates but not everyone has SUPER PERFECT ROMANTIC soulmates" which at least somewhat avoids the statistic inevitability of abusive soulmates if combined with Fate Can See The Future And So Your Fated Soulmate Just Won't Be) and these complaints aren't even from the "I'm poly where's my poly rep" kind of place which is a whole 'nother bag of worms, but let's go:

1. I aggressively believe that love is a choice. Love is something that is built, not predetermined before you meet someone. There might be initial compatibility aspects going down when you first meet someone, but, like. statistically there are more than seven and a half billion people on this planet. If there is only a single person perfectly meant for you, again, statistically, you are not going to meet them, I've seen the figure thrown that on average a person will meet on the order 10,000 people in their lifetime but let's even go 100,000, you will meet 0.001% of the world's population. Unless you think some sort of divine coincidence or fate is guiding you to a soulmate which throws free will out the window and then I can't help you but, like. discarding the math, I think it is actively harmful to a relationship to believe that it can be sustained on chemistry or predetermined 'but we're perfect for each other' alone. It requires work. You choose who is in your life, you choose who stays in your life, you choose who you want to be important to you based on what they contribute to your life and what you contribute to theirs.

(I am assuming this ask is at least partially in reaction to my soulmate post, which actually the fic in question, a buried and a burning flame, has since gone up. I highly recommend reading Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard first, but besides the setup for arson wizards that alas is never used because the fire mage with a soulmate in question is Responsible, I decided to both tackle 'okay soulmarks trope too let's throw it in', which leads to the not-really-a-spoiler passage that appears fairly early on about actually the full layout (albeit with less detail on the 'yeah for mages it just helps ground their magic, nothing romantic about it' part) of my Soulmate Rules:

Soulmates existed, both in the Empire of Astandalas and across the Wide Seas. They just worked slightly differently in Vangavaye-ve than the rest of the worlds.

The rest of the Empire seemed to view soulmates as a monolith. From what Cliopher had been able to glean, the tradition was grounded in their magic. Magi had soulmates, or rather, magic-workers would each have a soulmate. Cliopher wasn't clear if all magic-workers had a soulmate, or if magic-workers simply could have one, but there was always a mage in soulmate pairs, and it was always a pair. There were no marks, no visible signs involved, as soulmates were something that were sensed with magic. They were permanent, intrinsic, and to be recognized immediately.

To Wide Sea Islanders, soulmates were a choice.

The soul-marks, lana and lani-voa, would appear the first time you touched someone that you had chosen to love, with the full knowledge that you loved them. Cliopher had the marks of his mother and father, his sisters, Basil and Dimiter, Bertie and Ghilly. His skin was covered lovingly with the colors of his love, marks that he had gotten used to concealing with long sleeves in Astandalas when he had gotten tired of the constant staring at his 'primitive tattoos'.

Buru Tovo had been the only one to give him lani-voa, a greater mark of the soul. The pattern, with its thick lines and twisting design in a deep blue, extended over the entirety of his left arm and shoulder. They were the dances of his family pressed onto his skin, and he had traced them over with reverent and feather-light touch for months after he had received them. A lani-voa marked someone who had changed your life for the better in a deep and irrevocable way. It was a great honor to have even one.

And now, with the gold stretching up his right arm, new patterns that he didn't recognize stretching up from a handprint of pure gold that was expanding the longer he held that first contact with Tor—

now he had two.

(Buru Tovo is Cliopher's great uncle, for context. In fact, everyone listed there is either a familial or platonic relationship, with a single relationship that used to be romantic but settled into platonic.))

so. yeah. Love is a choice! The Biggest Of Moods! any soulmate lore that undermines that is a Bad Message, in my opinion.

The emphasis also on platonic soulmates leads into my second point:

2. I have found in my life that platonic relationships that I have are and have always been as important if not moreso than the romantic relationships. the emphasis of a single romantic relationship as the most important relationship that you can be in maybe fits for some people, but as a generalization to absolutely everyone I think is toxic and harmful. and not just for aro people! I'm not aro, but I would be miserable to write off my friends as Less Important And Meaningful to me than my parter, whom I love with all my heart! (I've actually ended up in my life settling into what I call the red/blue/gold system for 'relationships that I treat with the importance that society treats romantic relationships', but that's a personal thing). The standard soulmate trope tends to really solidly deliver the thesis of "there is a single romantic relationship that is the single most important relationship in your life" and I just think that's a very bad thesis.

3. Finally, I think the emphasis on permanent/forever is a harmful one for relationships in general. People change. you drift closer to people or further away from them. you move, they move, your schedules change, your interests change, your life changes. if you are living with a romantic partner you're going to keep seeing each other every day, but that doesn't stop you from changing as a person, which means see Point 1 Love Is A Choice; but even if you choose to remain together, you are probably eventually going to Ship Of Theseus your entire relationship. I think it is an important message that if that happens and it is no longer a relationship that is as deeply positive as it once was in your life, you don't...have to keep it out of loyalty to what it once was.

It's okay for people to drift out of your life that were once the most important person in your life. It doesn't invalidate how important and meaningful that relationship used to be, and it isn't a betrayal to let yourself and them and your relationships change and evolve. The idea that something has to be forever for it to matter I think is the idea about soulmates that I disagree with the most. Probably because that was the hardest lesson for me to learn as a kid and a teenager, and the life lesson that I am proudest for learning.

3.5 your point 'plus if it's just a magic thing it "feels" more justified in-universe that soulmates exist' is exactly on the nose, literally I am unable to write anything without attempting to write down a universal theory of everything for How The World Works. if something soulmate-wise is going down even if it never appears on the page you bet your ass I have either figured out the general cosmology and theology of "are there gods or divine forces who have instituted this policy? if so, why? what purpose does it serve", or in the case of abaabf which already has such interesting magic rules in the original canon of "is there an evolutionary reason for soulmates to exist" which I don't go tracing out full evolutionary biology for a fic necessarily mostly because I would want the full evolutionary biology in canon to make sure mine is compliant enough but that sure as hell does translate to "if soulmates exist and it's not for the reason of Because Godlike Beings Said So, there better be a practical purpose". I find at least long-form soulmate fics (ie things With Plot and a Developed Setting that aren't just "let's do a ficlet with this well-known trope") that Do Not Feel Like They've At Least Thought About Why Soulmates Happen To Exist hurt my soul. which I think slightly intersects with my "I hate it when the rules of the universe/ laws of physics are human-centric" instead of "the base rules which were not designed for humans came first, and how the human world works arose in reaction to them" and. yeah. consistent desire to know at least for myself why things are set up the way that they're set up which gods ifmlam is wild and completely bullshit and pulls from quantum multiverse philosophy I started writing that thing when I was like. eighteen? nineteen? but at least it's there so I can be consistent.

as a caveat for everything above: I don't actually think that fiction, fanfiction in particular, needs to perfectly reflect what A Good Relationship or A Good Message About Relationships should be. it is a very human desire in a chaotic and confusing world to want a simple, absolute, binary thing to hold onto. fiction is a place for escapism or wish fulfillment or even exploring things that you wouldn't actually want in real life, I think that the movement in fandom/fiction that all of the messaging in your story should match the advice you'd give for a real-life setup is a bad and harmful one. mostly my opinions on soulmates and hence desire to do inversions of the soulmate trope in my fic and things like the red/blue/gold system and heavy emphasis on platonic relationships in original work that I'm writing is about a desire to see representation for me and the things I love and find important and my sort of relationships in the stories that are a big part of my life. but I am really glad that in doing so I seem to have struck a chord in other people, who maybe want to see the same thing!
